Studies related to geophysical education in Turkey began to emerge in the early years of the Republic. In the academic year 1926-1927, within the Science Branch (Faculty) of the then Istanbul Darülfünun (University), a Committee (Astronomy) and Institute of Geophysics was established. Immediately after the Second World War, in 1946, Istanbul University gained autonomy, and all faculties were restructured. During this restructuring, the Department of Geophysics was added to the Faculty of Science in 1948. The Geophysics Institute, which was among the existing institutes of the Faculty of Science, was opened in 1952. The first Director of the Institute was Prof. Dr. M. Fouché. Between 1953 and 1954, the transfer process of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ihsan Özdoğan to the Institute of Geophysics was completed. The year 1954 holds a significant place in the history of the Institute Prof. Dr. J. Coulomb, Director of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Paris, accepted to come to Turkey, thus, for the first time in its history, a geophysicist would take over the management of the Institute. The name of the Geophysics Institute was later changed to the Department of Geophysics through Law No. 115. In the following years, in 1959, 1965, and 1968, the teaching programs of the department were continuously renewed according to the conditions of the time and scientific developments. Lectures or conferences given by foreign experts during the establishment and development periods of the department contributed significantly to geophysical education. In 1955, studies related to Geophysical Engineering education were initiated, and in 1968, the Department of Applied Geophysics was opened. In 1969, the establishment of the Geophysical Engineering diploma was ensured. The Department of Geophysics separated from the Faculty of Science and joined the Faculty of Earth Sciences established in 1978, where the Department of Geophysical Engineering started its education in 1980. Later, in 1982, with the Higher Education Law, the Faculty of Engineering was established by merging the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, and the Department of Geophysical Engineering became a part of the Faculty of Engineering. Our department has a wide range of equipment used in mineral exploration and experienced academic staff who have participated in numerous projects.
